The New Zealand Black Caps caused the first big upset of the World T20 when they beat India by 47 runs in the tournament opener at Nagpur.
It was fireworks from the get go, with Guptill depositing the first ball of the match over the boundary, and losing his wicket the next ball. India were all over New Zealand with the ball, restricting them to 35/3 after 7 overs. Corey Anderson played a good hand with 34 from 42 balls, keeping the board ticking over with wicket falling around him. Luke Ronchi added a vital 21 from 11 balls during the final few overs to take the Black Caps to 126/7, a score many predicted would not be enough. The wickets were well shared between the Indian attack, with Bumrah the most economical, giving away just 15 runs from his 4 overs.
India were stunned when they lost the wickets of both Sharma and Dhawan with just 10 runs on the board. The Black Caps spin attack took charge, as they used the conditions to their advantage to have the Indian top order in all sorts of trouble. The spin trio of McCullum, Sodhi and Santner were spot on and never allowed India back into the contest. Dhoni played a lone hand with 30 at a run a ball, but never got any support from the other end. Santner was the chief destroyer for New Zealand, recording the best ever figures for a spinner against India with 4/11. India couldn’t even bat out their allotted 20 overs, after being bowled out for just 79, their second lowest ever T20 International score.
The upset will give plenty of lower ranked sides the confidence to know that in Indian condition any team can win on the day. For India it will be back to the drawing board, as preparing a pitch to suit them backfired horribly for them.
