South Africa opened their ODI series against India with an impressive 5 runs win at Kanpur on Sunday despite heroics with the bat from Rohit Sharma.

AB de Villiers won the toss and elected to bat first. Amla and de Kock got the side off to s steady start, putting on 45 for the opening wicket before de Kock fell to the spin of Ashwin with his score on 29 off 33 balls. Amal went on to score 37 off 59 balls, but it was the bat of Faf du Plessis who added some much needed impotence to the innings with 62 off 77 balls before he was trapped lbw by Yadav. AB de Villiers came to the crease and times the ball well from the outset, he batted out the rest of the innings, smashing a six off the final delivery to bring up a well-deserved century, ending on 104 not out off just 73 balls. He was well supported by Behardien making 35 off 19 balls to take South Africa to 303/5 after 50 overs. Yadav was the top wicket taker for India, ending with 2/71.

Sharma and Dhawan got India off to a lighting start with a 42 run partnership before Morkel struck in the 8th over to send Dhawan back to the pavilion. What followed was some special batting from Sharma and Rahane, putting on 149 runs partnership to setup the chase for India. Rahane was dismissed for 60 off 82 balls, but it was Sharma who really caught the eye, blasting 150 off 133 balls before losing his wicket at a crucial juncture in the 47th over. The lower order failed to cope with the South African attack, and India fell 5 runs short. It was a terrific final over from Kagiso Radaba who ensured the win for South Africa, bowling the final over for just 5 runs, while picking up the wickets of Binny and Dhoni off consecutive deliveries. Imran Tahir also put on a good performance with the ball, picking up 2/57.
