The first day of the opening test match between Sri Lanka and India saw 12 wicket fall, but ended with Indian in the ascendancy after a good performance with the bat in the final session of the day.

Angelo Mathews won the toss for Sri Lanka and opted to bat first on a slow looking wicket. It was the pace upfront that had Sri Lanka in difficulty as both Sharma and Aaron attacked with plenty of short deliveries to have both the Sri Lankan openers back in the pavilion with just 15 runs on the board. Ravi Ashwin broke the back of the Sri Lankan innings when he picked up the big wicket of Sangakkara. Ashwin didn’t stop there, getting rid of both Thirimanne and Mubarak to see Sri Lanka reaching lunch on the opening day with the score on 65/5.

Mathews and Chandimal opted to counter-attack after lunch, putting on a 79 runs partnership before Mathews was dismissed for 64 off 92 balls. Chandimal went on to score 59 off 77 which saw Sri Lanka to a below par total of 183 all out of 49 overs. Ashwin was the top bowler for India, ending with figures of 6/46 from his 14 overs.

India were in early trouble, losing the wickets of Rahul and Sharma with just 28 runs on the board, but managed to recover well with the bats of Kohli and Dhawan dominating the final session. India managed to reach 128/2 as the close of play after 34 overs, and will go into the day two of the test match trailing the Sri Lankan first innings score by 55 runs with 8 wickets still in hand. At the wicket for India will be Dhawan on 53 not out and Kohli on 45 not out. The latter will be hoping for a big score as he looks to assert himself as the new Captain of the Indian test side.
