Pakistan kicked off their World T20 campaign with a comprehensive win over Bangladesh at Eden Garden in Kolkata on Wednesday. They were dominant in all facets of the game from the outset, which will give them plenty of confidence going forward in the tournament.
Afridi won the toss for Pakistan and elected to bat first. Sharjeel Khan got his side off to a lightning start with 18 from 10 balls before he was bowled by Arafat Sunny. Shehzad and Hafeez made good use of the power play overs and showed good enterprise during their 95 runs partnership. Shehzad lost his wicket on 52 from 39 balls while Hafeez went on to top score for Pakistan with a skillful 64 from 42 balls. Afridi promoted himself up the order, and blasted the hapless Bangladesh bowling attack to all parts of the ground, scoring 49 from just 19 balls to take Pakistan to a formidable total of 201/5 after the allotted 20 overs. Ahmed and Sunny picked up two wickets each for the Tigers, but had huge problems in containing the powerful Pakistani batting line-up.
Bangladesh got off to the worst possible start, losing the wicket of the in-form Sarkar without scoring when he was comprehensively castled by Mohammad Irfan. Rahman and Iqbal got the chase back on par, but a double strike by Afridi saw both back in the pavilion to leave the Tigers in huge trouble at 58/3 after 8 overs. Shakib Al Hasan played a decent knock to end on 50 not out from 40 balls but it was never going to be enough to get Bangladesh close. They ended the allotted 20 overs on 146/6, handing Pakistan a well-deserved 55 runs win. The pace duo of Amir and Irfan were spot on, taking 3 wickets between them while keeping the run scoring at a minimum.
Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi was named man of the match for his 40 with the bat and 2/27 with the ball.
