Sri Lanka showed good composure to record a well-deserved 3 wickets win over Pakistan in the 2nd ODI at Pallekele on Wednesday.
Azhar Ali won the toss for Pakistan, and elected to bat first. He opened the batting with Ahmed Shehzad, and together the pair put on 59 runs for the opening wicket before Shehzad was bowled by Pathirana for 30 off 54 balls. Azhar Ali did a good job of anchoring the innings with 79 before falling victim to Dilshan in the 40th over. It was in the middle order that the acceleration came, with Shoaib Malik blasting 51 runs at a run a ball, before Mohammad Rizwan scored a whirlwind 52 off 38 balls to propel the Pakistan score. Anwar Ali contributed 29 off 20 balls towards the death overs to take Pakistan to a respectable score of 287/8 after 50 overs. Angelo Mathews was the most economical bowler for Sri Lanka, conceding just 36 runs from his 10 overs, while Malinga and Pathirana picked up 2 wickets each.
Sri Lanka got off to a unbelievable starts, thanks for the bat of Kusal Perera who was reminiscent of Jayasuriya of old, blasting the ball to all parts of the ground during the power play overs to score 68 off just 25 balls, striking 13 fours and 2 sixes in the process. Dilshan recognizing the good ball striking did a good job to feed him the strike. Pakistan fought back well, picking up wicket at regular intervals to get themselves back into the contest with both Tharanga and Mathews failing in the middle order for Sri Lanka. Chandimal showed good maturity towards the end of the innings, doing an excellent job of batting with the tail. He scored the winning runs in the 49th over, scoring on 48 not out off 63 balls. Rahat Ali was the best bowler for Pakistan, ending with figures of 3/72.
