Pakistan secured an ODI series win over Sri Lanka on Wednesday with yet another powerful performance at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Angelo Mathews won the toss for Sri Lanka and elected to bat first. Kusal Perera lost his wicket off the second ball of the innings without scoring, bringing Thirimanne to the crease. Together with the experienced Dilshan the pair put on 109 runs to get Sri Lanka out of trouble. Dilshan reached his fifty before losing his wicket when he was bowled by Iman Wasim. Thirimanne went on to anchor the innings with a brilliant 90 off 126 balls, but lost his wicket at a crucial time in the 42nd over when Sri Lanka needed acceleration. Pakistan bowled well towards the latter overs to restrict Sri Lanka to 256/9, after being on course for a much larger score. Mohammad Irfan was the top wicket taker for Pakistan, ending with figures of 3/50. The spin duo of Yasir Shah and Imad Wasim also did a good job of keeping the Sri Lankan batting order in check.
Pakistan made a blistering start in chase of the 257 for victory, with Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad putting on a 75 runs opening stand before Ali was out with his score on 33 off 28 balls. Shehzad went on to top score with 95 off 90 balls, which also secured him the man of the match award. Mohammad Hafeez will be happy with his 70 off 88 balls, as he desperately needed to show form with the bat. The Pakistan batting looked secure throughout the chase, reaching the target needed to the win in the 41st over with 7 wickets down. It was the batting of Sarfraz Ahmed and Shoiab Malik that got them over the line to give Pakistan a 3-1 lead in the five match ODI series.
